In Spring 2009 I took part in a live design brief which involved an intensive two-week studio in Cardiff. Joining more than 60 designers, planners, artists, architects and engineers from Australia, Japan, China, India, Singapore, Vietnam, Korea and Wales, the concept behind this multi-disciplinary studio was to come up with ideas and visions for Cardiff in 2020, focusing on the cities problems as a growing city and then working closely in small groups to produce creative solutions. I thoroughly enjoyed sharing ideas and collaborating with such a culturally diverse group of individuals, many of which had never been to the UK before.
This film explores the idea that the different areas of Cardiff are divided by boundaries and empty spaces, our concept was to visualize the city as a kind of tapestry and our goal was to inject various interventions in to these fragmented spaces, and so inviting new interactions and connections between people and neighbourhoods. It is about stitching in new possibilities to the city of Cardiff.
Professor Richard Goodwin gives some feedback after hearing a groups pitch.
The short time frame of this studio meant that we had regular critiques and received a lot of advice from the several experienced designers/ architects/ professors that were on hand to help us.
